Too often we are willing to take the statements or views of others, who may
appear more learned, or are perceived as an "official voice" as fact.
Often times we fall victim to 'group think' or
'herd mentality' because if "everyone is saying it" it must be true!
Right?
Interestingly, many philosophers (such as Nietzsche) and psychologists (such as
Freud and Trotter) have studied the 'herd mentality' or 'mob behavior' and the
social motivators behind the phenomena. Volumes have been
written on the topic but in short, it is usually the result of our fear, yes
fear . . . that we may not be accepted by our peers if we aren't just like them,
dress like them, talk like them, think like them, etc. 'Group Think'
unfortunately, is perceived as safe.
Now of course those who aspire to have power over you (be it politicians, news
magnates, special interest groups, or whomever) are all aware of these concepts,
and they generally know how to play 'the masses' like a fine violin.
There are numerous reoccurring themes that the
"Status Quo" setters employ . . . and we've all heard them before;
"The country is in decay and only I, my party, my product, our government, our
faith, etc. etc. can save you!"
They count on the weakness of 'group think and heard mentality' to push their
agenda.
Thinking for yourself takes effort, it takes personal courage, and it represents
social risk (what if they laugh at you.)
